Ours is an all American story - typical of how communities grew up all across our great nation. While our story takes place in the back country of northwestern North Carolina at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is likely to bear many similarities to the development of crossroads, towns, and cities throughout America.
It had taken little more than 100 years for the corridors along the coastline of this still-new continent to overflow. As tensions grew and conflicts flared, the pioneer spirit set in. Families literally packed up everything they owned and headed into the unknown-searching for the "promised land."

Without an army of volunteers, much of the programming would not be available at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, so on Monday the museum held its 15th annual volunteer brunch to honor their work.
Angela Yacano was honored as volunteer of the year, although she was not able to attend. Rick Smith was honored as docent of the year.

Dozens of history buffs gathered at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History Saturday as author Chris Hartley discussed his latest book, “Stoneman’s Raid, 1865” and the effect this pivotal raid had on the Civil War.

Kids and their parents enjoyed a fun day of activities that included everything from making Easter bonnets to searching for Easter eggs on Saturday.
The day’s activities began at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at the museum’s annex where hats and all the adornments were provided for kids to use their imaginations. The girls made Easter bonnets and the boys decorated cowboy hats.
As the kids finished up their hat making, the Easter Bunny arrived just in time to lead a parade up Main Street to the Dr. Robert Smith house.
Community Police Officer Ray Arnder with the Mount Airy Police Department helped block traffic at each intersection until the Easter Bunny along with a long line of kids and parents safely reached their destination.

As part of the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History’s programming for Black History month, actor and playwright Mike Wiley returned again this year to tell the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play national league baseball.
Thursday night, Wiley performed his one-man act, “A Game Apart: The Life of Jackie Robinson,” at the museum’s annex to a crowd of 87.
